Population Aging

Spotlight: Longevity in Context

Not long ago, worries centered predominantly around overpopulation: a rising number of humans confronted with dwindling resources, leading to potential technological, environmental, and societal upheavals. Such a view is certainly not baseless: it took a mere 12 years for Earth’s population to surge from 7 to 8 billion. However, with growth rates steadily declining, the global concern around human overpopulation is evolving into another dilemma. A different, equally disconcerting, and very real scenario has been permeating the minds of the scientific community: one in which age-related diseases continue to sideline a significant segment of humanity and burden the economy, sustained by a diminishing pool of young and healthy individuals. The focal point has shifted, and it now lies in population aging, which, coupled with the inaccessibility of longevity medicine, emerges as our demographic challenge.

Population aging is becoming a defining issue of our time. Fertility rates are declining, life expectancy is increasing, and societies are starting to feel the impact of this demographic shift. According to the UN, the number of countries experiencing annual population decline is expected to more than double by 2050. By then, the global population over 60 will also have doubled since 2022. This isn’t just a question of numbers. It’s about how we adapt medically, economically, and socially. Addressing this trend requires long-term planning and a shift in healthcare priorities, with a focus on proactive and preventive strategies to extend the healthy human healthspan.

How do we prepare for a world where there are more grandparents than grandchildren? It’s time to think seriously about the implications of an aging population.
